Kindness of strangers | Daily Prompt

This prompt is from The Daily Post‘s blog site where each day they provide a prompt that you can use to write about absolutely anything. I’m not planning to do this every day, but once a week at least.

The prompt for today is: Bewildered.

I stumbled into the cafe. I was not having a good day. I’d forgotten my umbrella and one of my heels had snapped as I was dashing across the road in the rain.

I went up to the counter to order my morning coffee, trying not to splash water everywhere as I took off my coat. “Latte with one sugar, please.”

The barista punched the buttons on the till. “That’s $4.40, please.”

I put my hand in my pocket to get my card, and found my pocket empty. I frowned and searched my other pocket; it wasn’t there either. I closed my eyes and said a quick prayer hoping I’d find it in one of my coat pockets.

“Shit,” I muttered, I couldn’t find it my coat pockets either. “I’m so sorry, I think I’ve lost my card.”

An older lady stepped up next to me. “Please, let me pay.”

The barista shrugged and said, “Ok, that’s $4.40 please.”

I stared at the woman, completely bewildered. “Thank you, oh you didn’t have to do that, thank you so much,” I said with tears in my eyes.

She smiled warmly at me, patted my hand and said, “Honey, I saw you coming across the street, and you know, we all have days like this. Today it was my turn to do something kind for you, tomorrow it’ll be your turn.”

Until next time.
